Why it’s important to get things right the first time

When we first meet someone, we feel a warm surge of oxytocin. This softens us up a bit and makes us more flexible and open. Use that moment wisely. By the second meeting, we are already establishing habits–that’s how the brain saves energy. Make sure they are the habits you want to establish.

Do you want to have long, boring team meetings? Hold one the first day, and that habit will take root. Are your associates always late? Nip that in the bud, or expect to deal with it forever. People slip into habits very easily, so beware. Today’s unsanctioned behavior is tomorrow’s standard. Get it right in the beginning.
