Does AI Shrink Your Brain?

Why offloading too much to AI kills your creativity, weakens your memory, and increases your risk of dementia.

Is AI Making You Less Smart?

We’re living through a cognitive revolution. AI tools like ChatGPT have slowly but surely worked their way into almost every facet of our daily lives. There are automatic AI search engine assistants, “smart” photo editing apps, automatic suggestions for writing emails, and so much more. With all these tools at our fingertips, it certainly feels like we’re becoming more efficient, more productive, and perhaps even smarter.

Unfortunately, neuroscience points to the opposite. By relying on all these tools that are now available, we might actually be getting cognitively weaker. When you consistently offload mental tasks and effort to AI, your brain literally changes—and not in the way you’d hope.

So, here’s the uncomfortable question: Are you outsourcing your intelligence to machines at the risk of losing it yourself?

How Does AI Affect Your Brain? 

Recently, MIT researchers measured brain activity while people wrote essays with or without the use of AI support. Their results were quite alarming:

→ There was a 48% reduction in brain connectivity for the group that used AI to write their essay.

→ 83% of them couldn’t recall or correctly quote a single line from the essays they had just written only moments earlier.

→ Those who used AI tools also reported much lower ownership of what they had written. They did not feel like the work was “theirs.”

It’s not surprising that the group with the strongest neural engagement was those who wrote unaided (brain-power only). This group also had the highest memory recall and the deepest sense of ownership compared to the others. Even when these participants later switched to using ChatGPT, their brains still lit up more strongly than those who started with AI from the beginning.

The takeaway here is that while AI tools might boost productivity in the short term, it comes at the cost of cognitive debt. Weaker memory, less critical thinking, and reduced agency over your own ideas are all side effects of this kind of mental offloading.

Think of it like this: if your brain were a muscle, consistently using AI would be like always taking the elevator instead of the stairs. Convenient? Absolutely. Building strength? Not so much.

What Is The Cost Of Relying On AI? 

In the same way that financial debt can accumulate slowly over time until suddenly, you’re in trouble, cognitive debt can creep up on you without you recognising it at first.

There’s a concerning pattern that MIT researchers identified when it comes to this:

Phase 1: The Honeymoon – AI makes everything faster and easier. You feel more productive.

Phase 2: The Dependency – Your brain adapts by doing less heavy lifting. Why strain when AI can handle it?

Phase 3: The Deficit – When you need to think independently, your cognitive muscles have atrophied. Their capacity is diminished. Things are HARDER.

…and the cycle continues.

Why Should You Be Careful Using AI? 

This isn’t just a matter of not being able to write an essay without ChatGPT helping you. The critical skills that are being replaced by AI tools (deep analysis, synthesis, creative problem-solving, and memory consolidation) are exactly the ones that:

  • Drive you towards innovation in your organization
  • Help you make impactful strategic decisions
  • Allow you to adapt to unexpected challenges and situations
  • Give you the mental resilience needed to navigate (and lead) through uncertainty

When you outsource these processes to AI, you’re not just changing how you work. Fundamentally, you’re changing how you think.

How Do You Use AI The Correct Way? 

The good news is that by understanding a bit of neuroscience, you will have the ability to use AI intelligently. The key to this is strategic cognitive engagement. You need to know when to lean on AI and when to rely on your own mental capabilities.

Putting the Brain First: Before reaching for AI, engage your own cognitive processes first. Think, analyze, synthesize, and then (if needed) reach for AI to enhance, rather than replace, your thinking.

As I said before, people who first worked without AI and then added it to their toolkit maintained stronger neural connectivity and better cognitive performance than those who started with AI assistance from the get-go.

How Can You Use AI Without Losing Your Thinking Skills? 

You wouldn’t delegate all physical movement to a machine, so don’t delegate all mental effort to AI. Instead, use this action plan:

1. The 70-30 Rule

Reserve at least 70% of your cognitive work for your brain, and a maximum of 30% for AI assistance. This maintains the neural pathways while gaining efficiency benefits.

2. Practice “Cognitive Calisthenics”

  • Write first drafts without AI
  • Solve problems manually before using AI tools
  • Summarize articles in your own words before asking AI
  • Make decisions through your own reasoning process first, before reaching for AI to do so

3. Use AI as a Thinking Partner, not a Replacement

Instead of asking AI to write your presentation, ask it to challenge your ideas. Not only will it ensure that your arguments are robust and stand up to scrutiny, but you’ll also be maintaining your cognitive edge. Instead of having it solve your problem, use it to explore different perspectives to your own solution.

4. Guard Your Memory

People who regularly rely on AI struggle to remember their own work. You can avoid this by:

  • Actively reviewing AI-generated content. Don’t just take it at face value.
  • Rewriting key points in your own voice. Better yet, manually write them down.
  • Teaching concepts to others to strengthen memory pathways and deepen your understanding.

5. Create “No-AI Zones”

If AI has crept its way into every aspect of your life, combat it by designating specific tasks or time periods where you work without AI assistance. This will help keep your cognitive muscles active and strong.

Is AI Helping or Hurting Your Thinking? 

AI is an incredible tool when used wisely. Just like the iconic Spider-Man line, “with great power comes great responsibility,” AI tools are much the same. Any powerful technology can either amplify your capabilities or replace them entirely. The choice is yours.

Every time you outsource your thinking to AI, you’re actively making a trade-off. In some cases, it might be worth it, but if you’re not intentional about maintaining your own cognitive fitness, the risk just isn’t worth the reward.

The neuroscience is clear: cognitive engagement is use-it-or-lose-it. Your brain evolved to be one of the most sophisticated thinking machines in the universe. Don’t let convenience convince you to put it on permanent autopilot.

The future belongs not to those who can use AI best, but to those who can think best with AI. Stay sharp.
