Giving Feedback on Giving Feedback

The problem with giving feedback and how to fix it:

There are few things worse than getting negative feedback.
Combine that with a bad delivery, and malicious intent, and it’s almost enough to make you want to curl up and hide away.

We need to know our pain points in order to grow and improve – this is true. We do not need to be made to feel small or stupid about them, however. Giving and receiving feedback is a 2-way street, and respect and positive intent is needed from all sides in order for it to be constructive!

A great way of delivering feedback is the sandwich method. Deliver the negative feedback or news book-ended with 2 positive pieces of feedback. The blow of the negative information will be softened, and the receiver will likely be much more receptive than if you just approached them with a criticism.

What is your experience with giving and receiving feedback? Did you have a manager who did a particularly good (or bad) job at it?
