The Benefits of Fear in the Workplace
Can a small amount of fear actually be a good thing?
There’s no place for fear in the workplace. Agree or disagree?
Speaking from a neuroscientific perspective, fear can actually be a GOOD thing for you at work. I’m not speaking of a toxic boss or crippling amounts of stress, though. I’m talking about being *slightly* over-challenged.
Contrary to popular belief, your best performance doesn’t happen when your skillset is aligned with a challenge. It happens when the challenge is a littleeeee bit too big for you.
Why?
Because that’s when your brain releases noradrenaline, which serves as a wake-up call and elevates your brain into peak performance. Find your “fear sweet spot,” though. A little fear goes a long way when entering flow, but too much can lead to burnout.
